History of Vecchiascuola and the Village
Welcome to Valchiavenna
Welcome to discover a place full of history! We are located in the hamlet of Chiavenna called Pianazzola, a splendid balcony over Valchiavenna at 635 m asl. Easily reached by a convenient paved road about 5 km from Chiavenna, along the SS37.
History of the school: The Guesthouse/Holiday House building, built between 1906 and 1916, was used until 1981 as an ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, as over 300 people and several children once lived in the village, now reduced to only about 40.
Renovation: Subsequently, the school building remained empty and unused for many years, and the various auctions held by the Chiavenna municipality to give new life to this historic building were deserted, with no buyer.... until André bought it in late 2015. The building was completely renovated in 2016/2018.
Life in the hamlet: Pianazzola does not even get methane, and for heating you have to carry pellets on your back. The property is located at the most scenic spot in Pianazzola, reachable only on foot in 5 minutes from the parking lot above, crossing the historic pedestrian village.

It is good to visit a place if you know its history, even better if it is told by those who lived it. In this regard, we were lucky enough to meet a woman who was a native of here, who told us how difficult life was when the road from Chiavenna did not even exist. One went up and down the path in the woods with difficulty, however, until the 1960s there were the essential services for life in the hamlet: the elementary school, the pastor of the little church, a bar, an inn, and two stores.

Life in the past: She told us about when she gave birth in '65 to the last of her children and they carried her on the path with a stretcher to the ambulance at the point where the road -still under construction- reached.
The change: The 5 km of paved road built in the 1960s, separating Pianazzola from the center of Chiavenna, served the inhabitants to escape over time from this paradise in search of more modernity.

The life of the village related to chestnut groves, vineyards, and pastoralism has largely ceased and now, years later, some houses have also been sold to foreigners, Germans, Belgians, Swiss, and Dutch, who have refurbished them and become second vacation homes. Still today, though, there are as many as 3 productive vineyards on the bank towards Pianazzola: nebbiolo delle Alpi still endures and has new impetus with recent activities.
Our facility: We also wanted to keep some history in our accommodation and decorated all the rooms with a school theme.
